Panacea

Humour is frequently the best medicine, the salve, the escape ...... but there is room for loyalty and honour and truth and above all justice, if life is to be endured when times get tough.

One needs to self medicate if one is to survive the world or Irkdom and my solace is words, ideas, music and images which lift my spirits. Usually they are idealistic, but an eclectic mix nonetheless. Loved the relationship between the crusty old soldier and the idealistic young aide in "Scent Of A Woman" and the scene where Al Pacino's character takes on the bullshit of a system is magnificent. A shame there isn't a lot more honesty like this - justice would be better served. The scene from "Dead Poet's Society" where the sensitive gentle Todd stands up to acknowledge the wonderful gift bestowed on him by his discredited teacher always gets to me. Once again it is the lone voice of honour and truth crying out in the wilderness of political correctness and conservatism. From Dead Poet's again - a wonderful illustration of perspectives and having the courage to be oneself midst a crowd of dissenters.  Mr. Keating recognises his students are individuals, and not as the typical tokenistic gesture so prevalent in school mission statements and promos, but where it counts - in the school of life.
